Hi Everyone! Now that the weather is NOT yucky, go outside and get messy. Here are some fun ideas for outdoor art time: Sidewalk Chalk - a classic that never goes out of style. Follow the link to purchase some online.. http://www.amazon.com/Crayola-Count-Sidewalk-Chalk-51-2048/dp/B00AHAJGXK They are also available at some grocery stores, dollar stores, and of course, craft stores. If it's in a space open to the sky, the rain will wash away the temporary beauty, allowing for new creations. Water! Paint with water on a warm sidewalk or stone and then watch your artwork evanesce into the ether, contemplating it's transience. Don't have any brushes? Use old sponges, rags, spray bottles, twigs, feathers, or your hands and feet! The link leads to a blog a woman wrote about water painting with her kids. A blog within a blog. That's so meta. http://www.sixsistersstuff.com/2011/05/painting-sidewalk-with-water.html Sand! Go to the beach as the tide is receding and draw in the damp sand. Watch the following video to see some professional sand artists at work! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that job does exist. http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=UcbUcCJCgEo Once again, the nature of time and ocean currents will send the art from whence it came, making room for newer, improved versions of oneself to make a mark, however temporary, on that special space. Sculpture Take a suggestion from Andy Goldsworthy and make art from the objects you find laying around. Have a deficit of nature? use scraps of unwanted packaging and clothes! Shadows!
Move your body and strike some poses. The sun in the morning and evening casts long, strange shadows that make for excellent art that requires no supplies, no mess, and no upkeep. Watch the video to see a beautiful performance of shadow art. http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=QAGG4l9LsXg

Good afternoon, As another bit of wintery weather approaches, we are faced with the WHAT DO I DO ALL DAY conundrum. Here are a few ideas of creative activities anyone can enjoy. Ask your parents or guardians for help getting and using supplies. Have some newspaper scraps, scissors, glue and a pen? Cut out some fun and familiar shapes! Glue them onto colored paper, white paper or more newspaper! Doodle with pen around the edges! Don't have scissors? Tear the paper! Don't have a pen? How about a marker, soft pencil, or crayon? Have some newspaper and some tape? Make some sticks by rolling up the newspaper and taping the edge closed. Then, tape the sticks together to make an abstract picture or simple arrangement of shapes. Afterward, paint it, color it with marker or just leave it as is. Sometimes the ads in the newspaper make for great color schemes! Similarly to the previous project, make some sticks by rolling up the newspaper and taping the edge closed. Then, tape those sticks into geometric shapes, like triangles as pictured. You could also do squares or pentagons. Then tape the shapes together to make a crazy sculpture or building! Don't have any tape? Can you think of a clever way to make the sticks stay together without it? What other fun things do you think you could make with newspaper before it gets tossed into the recycle bin? Send me a comment and I can tell you how to send me a picture of your creation!
Have fun arting! -Ms. Mickelson Welcome, one and all!
I'm slowly building up a website where I can share all the wonderful things we do in the art room, as well as fun things for people to do outside the classroom! I hope you come by to visit often, whether that be in my classroom or to my website! Much love, Ms Mickelson |
